Balaclava-Wearing Gang Ties Up Family, Threatens With Hot Iron

A gang of four men, faces hidden behind balaclavas and armed with serrated knives, smashed their way into the home. They bound a man in his 50s, his two sons in their 20s, and a young woman with cable ties, packaging tape, and electrical cables. While terrorising the family, the thugs threatened them with a scorching hot iron, demanding cash, jewellery, and valuables.

One of the sons suffered a deep slash across his face, leaving a permanent scar as a grim reminder of the ordeal. After the gang fled with watches, phones, and trainers, the family managed to free themselves and call the emergency services.

Four Arrested and Charged After Swift Police Action

Police quickly spotted a van linked to the suspects leaving a nearby street. Officers tailed and stopped it, arresting Levar Greaves (29) from Essex; Adebowale Adeduro Mafo (37) from London; Aaron Murray (26) from Essex; and Malakye Tomlin (25) from sussex999.co.uk/where/chelmsford/" title="Chelmsford" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Chelmsford. All faced charges of aggravated burglary. Crucial evidence like a victim’s coat, a stolen bank card, and the gang’s balaclavas were found in the vehicle.

Damning Phone Messages and Shoeprints Seal Their Fate

Investigators matched footwear found at the scene to the suspects, while phone messages revealed the raid was planned. After a 13-day trial at portsmouth/" title="Portsmouth" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Portsmouth Crown Court, a jury delivered verdicts: Greaves, Mafo, and Murray were unanimously found guilty of aggravated burglary. Tomlin was convicted of burglary with a lesser role.

Long Sentences Handed Down – Justice Served

On March 30, Greaves, Mafo, and Murray were each sentenced to 11 years behind bars, with a minimum two-thirds served before release. Tomlin received a Community Order, including rehabilitation, 100 hours of unpaid work, and a victim surcharge.

Detective Constable Helen Carthew of Hampshire’s Eastern Major Crime Unit said:

“This was understandably a terrifying ordeal for the residents. The gang’s planning was clear, but thanks to swift police action, they were caught before escaping.”
