Kent Police, working alongside Medway Council and local agencies, has initiated a significant crackdown on crime and antisocial behaviour in Chatham town centre starting Friday, 29 May 2026. This new Clear, Hold, Build initiative targets the area bordered by New Cut, Hards Town, Rope Walk and Medway Street.
The Clear, Hold, Build strategy is a three-phase plan aimed at eradicating criminal activity through persistent police enforcement. The first phase, ‘clear’, focuses on removing offenders from the area. The second phase, ‘hold’, involves maintaining a strong security presence with high-visibility patrols, supported by partner organisations and community involvement. The final phase, ‘build’, empowers residents to develop a resilient, crime-free neighbourhood.
This scheme builds on a previous successful Clear, Hold, Build operation in Chatham’s New Road area, which resulted in a significant reduction in crime reports. The current wider roll-out covers the entire town centre to protect more residents and businesses, with the goal of creating a safer and friendlier environment where the community can thrive without fear of antisocial behaviour.
Chief Inspector Gary Woodward, Medway District Commander, highlighted the initiative’s effectiveness, stating: ‘Schemes such as these have proven effective both locally and nationally to reduce reported offences. We are confident this operation will achieve the same impact.’
Councillor Alex Paterson also emphasised the local benefits, saying: ‘This action will help us all build a safer and thriving community, showing a joint commitment to a better future.’
Kent Police and Medway Council, together with community groups and local businesses, are united in their efforts to tackle crime and antisocial behaviour in Chatham. This collaborative approach demonstrates an ongoing commitment to improving public safety and quality of life across the town centre.
