Lancashire Police have reopened the investigation into the death of 27-year-old Katie Beattie, who was found dead in her Lancaster flat on 1 July 2024. This significant development comes after a persistent campaign by Katie’s family, who disputed the initial police conclusion and used the Victims’ Right to Review scheme to call for a fresh inquiry.
The original police verdict classified Katie’s death as “not suspicious,” but her family uncovered concerning evidence suggesting possible foul play.
Family Challenges Police Verdict
Katie’s parents, David and Shonna Beattie, along with her sister Kellie Rhodes, advocated for reopening the case after identifying critical inconsistencies. They pointed to unexplained sightings of an unidentified man entering and leaving Katie’s flat days before her death, captured on a neighbour’s doorbell camera.
Disturbing Crime Scene Discrepancies
When Katie’s body was discovered, she was nearly naked, wearing only one sock, and had visible bruises. Her sister also observed blood spatter on the flat’s ceiling and walls, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding her death.
Unsettling Mortuary Findings
During a mortuary visit, the family noticed a fresh puncture mark between Katie’s toes. Katie, who was a vulnerable adult with mental health and addiction struggles, had previously warned her family about predatory individuals forcibly injecting her in that manner.
Delays Impact Forensic Examination
The initial police decision that Katie’s death was not suspicious caused a nine-day delay before a full Home Office forensic post-mortem could be conducted. This delay prevented toxicologists and pathologists from determining a definitive cause of death, leading the coroner to record an open verdict.
Campaign For Katie Beth's Law
In response, the Beattie family launched a public petition advocating for “Katie Beth’s Law,” which would require a full forensic examination within 24 hours for unexplained deaths.
Lancashire Police have confirmed that new inquiries are now underway as detectives re-examine the timeline and carry out fresh interviews.
“Katie was a beloved daughter, sister, auntie and friend,” the family said. “The pain of losing her so suddenly, without answers, is something our family lives with every day. We remain determined to ensure Katie’s story is heard and every possible avenue is explored to establish the truth.”
The community now awaits the results of the reopened investigation, hoping it will bring justice and peace for Katie and her family.
