A nurse at University Hospital of North Tees in Stockton testified in court about a confrontation with Isabelle Welsh’s mother, Alexandra Walker, during a safeguarding discussion on 2 September 2023. The nurse revealed that Walker reacted aggressively when questioned about injuries to the toddler during an A&E visit.
The nurse described how Walker “kind of lunged” at her after the safeguarding concerns were raised, highlighting the tension surrounding the case amid the ongoing murder trial.
During the consultation in the paediatric department’s “farmyard room,” the nurse said Walker was confrontational when safeguarding procedures were brought up. She recalled, “Mum’s over the top of me at this point. I remember thinking if she hits me, I’m a goner because I can’t get out of the room.” Despite the aggressive stance, Walker did not physically strike the nurse but insisted the safeguarding referral was “totally unnecessary and totally over-the-top.” She demanded to see another doctor and threatened to take Isabelle home.
Isabelle Welsh was admitted to the hospital with a fractured leg, reportedly sustained two weeks before the visit. The nurse explained that the safeguarding alert was triggered due to multiple red flags, including soft tissue bruises, a social care note referencing domestic violence, the fracture itself, and delayed medical attention. Additionally, the toddler was noted to have multiple bruises covering her body.
Following her admission, Isabelle was transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Newcastle, where she was pronounced dead on 14 September 2023. Evidence presented to the jury detailed extensive injuries, including fractures to 21 bones, bruising, a brain bleed, and spinal damage.
Prosecutor Richard Wright KC stated that Isabelle had suffered a series of physical and sexual abuses in the weeks leading up to her death.
Alexandra Walker, 25, of Thornaby, and her boyfriend Harrison Simpson, 22, of Thorntree, face multiple charges including murder, causing or allowing the death of a child, assault by penetration, and cruelty to a person under 16. Both defendants deny all allegations.
