Gosport Man Jailed for Rape of Teen in Alleyway Attack
Martin Butler, 43, has been locked up for nine years after the horrifying rape of a 16-year-old girl in a Gosport alleyway. The attack happened between 5pm and 6pm on 19 November 2021, just off Gosport High Street.
Threats and Silence
The court heard how Butler, from Harbour Road, Gosport, threatened the girl he would come back for her if she told anyone about the attack. Terrified, the teen stayed silent until March 2023, when she finally reported the crime to police.
Hampshire Police launched an investigation, using a public E-fit appeal to track Butler down. He was arrested and charged with rape and assault by penetration.
Trial and Sentence
Butler’s trial began on 3 October and ended on 7 October with a guilty verdict on both counts. Today (2 December), Portsmouth Crown Court sentenced him to nine years in prison for rape and six years concurrently for assault by penetration. He will also serve an extended license period of five years.
Additionally, Butler faces an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and must sign the sex offenders register for life.
Voices from the Case
“These were horrendous crimes that have had a profound impact on the survivor in this case,” said DC Samantha Brown of Hampshire Constabulary’s Operation Amberstone team.
“Her incredible bravery to report this crime and her courage throughout the trial has been commendable. Because of her strength, a dangerous man is now behind bars.”
Andrea Hills, CPS Wessex Senior Crown Prosecutor, added: “The victim’s pre-recorded testimony, allowed under Section 28 of the Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act, spared her from giving evidence again at trial, reducing trauma.”
“Her bravery was pivotal in securing this conviction. We hope justice has been served.”
