Drivers experienced significant disruption on the M11 near Stansted Airport on Friday following two separate multi-vehicle crashes. Cambridgeshire Constabulary confirmed a serious collision involving a lorry and two cars just after midday near the A505 at Duxford. This incident led to a full closure of the southbound carriageway between junction 10 (Royston) and junction 9 (Newmarket).

Emergency services are currently managing the scene while police crash investigators continue to probe the incident. The closure has caused congestion extending back towards Cambridge, resulting in lengthy delays for motorists.

The collision forced the complete closure of the southbound M11, with Cambridgeshire Police warning that the carriageway would remain shut for some time. Motorists were advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes as emergency teams worked to clear the vehicles involved.

Earlier in the day, a separate multi-vehicle crash on the southbound M11 between junction 9 (Newmarket) and junction 8 (Stansted Airport) caused lane closures and further delays. Recovery teams attended the scene, but traffic was heavily congested with queues stretching up to five miles. National Highways reported delays of up to 45 minutes as a result.

Meanwhile, drivers on the M1 near Luton also faced long delays after a broken-down lorry blocked the motorway between junction 11 and Luton Airport. The vehicle’s brakes locked, preventing movement and causing delays of approximately 60 minutes.

A Cambridgeshire Constabulary spokesperson said: “Officers are currently at the scene of a serious collision on the M11 near the A505 at Duxford. The southbound carriageway is closed and is likely to be so for some time. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.”
