A trainee surgeon from Redhill, Surrey, Salil Korambayil, 34, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison following his conviction at a retrial for raping two women in their homes located in North Devon and Cornwall.

Korambayil was found guilty of three counts of rape by Judge Simon Carr at Truro Crown Court on 25 June 2026. The victims had met Korambayil through social media platforms.

Originally, Korambayil was convicted in November 2023; however, his convictions were quashed by the Court of Appeal after he lodged an appeal. The retrial removed previous reporting restrictions, allowing full details of the case to be made public.

The offences include one rape in North Devon in August 2020 and two rapes in Cornwall in March 2021. Korambayil was sentenced to two consecutive seven-year terms and is required to sign the sex offenders’ register for life.

The victims were praised for their strength and resilience in engaging with the legal process despite the trauma they endured. One victim described the retrial as reopening a dark period filled with nightmares and flashbacks but expressed gratitude for achieving justice.

Detective Inspector Daniel Massey, who leads Operation Humilis, thanked the victims for their courage and commended his team for their dedication to the investigation. Devon & Cornwall Police have urged all victims of sexual abuse to come forward, reassuring them of ongoing support and thorough investigations.

Anyone affected by these crimes can contact Devon and Cornwall Police quoting Operation Humilis or crime reference 50002000044. Support is also available through the National Rape Crisis Helpline at 0808 802 9999 and local Sexual Assault Referral Centres at 0300 303 4626.
