Visitors heading to Brighton & Hove’s iconic coastline this summer might notice a mixed condition along the promenade. The council has acknowledged it cannot maintain the entire seafront stretch despite securing £280,000 for urgent upkeep.
The £280,000 boost will focus on essential repairs along the busy stretch from Hove Lagoon to Saltdean. Refurbishment works include fixing railings, benches, and seafront shelters. Additionally, the funding will cover safety inspections, cleaning, and improvements to promenades and public spaces.
However, the council has warned that this amount will not be enough for a full makeover of the entire coastline. Maintenance efforts will prioritise areas where public safety and access are at risk.
“The seafront is one of Brighton & Hove’s most loved and recognisable places but also one of the toughest to maintain,” said Councillor Birgit Miller. Brighton’s seaside asset stretches for miles and faces relentless coastal weather throughout the year. Keeping it safe, functional, and visually appealing remains a constant challenge.
Looking ahead, the council is actively seeking additional funding sources to increase maintenance efforts. Yet, with tight public budgets and rising costs, some parts of the seafront are likely to show signs of wear as summer crowds arrive.
For a city revitalised by its seaside charm, the balance between budget constraints and upkeep needs is set to be a significant issue this season.
